Carpet or LVT?

Both can be excellent choices. The right one depends less on which is fashionable and more on how you actually use the room.

Comfort and warmth

Carpet has the obvious advantage when softness and warmth matter most. Bedrooms, lounges and family spaces often benefit from the quieter, warmer feel it gives underfoot.

LVT feels firmer and more structured. It works particularly well where you want the appearance of wood or stone and an easy clean surface.

Cleaning

LVT is generally easier to wipe clean, which makes it a strong choice for busy homes, entrances, dining areas and spaces where spills are more likely.

Carpet needs regular vacuuming and occasional deeper cleaning, but modern ranges can still be practical for everyday family life.

Noise

Carpet naturally absorbs more sound. That can make a noticeable difference in bedrooms, upstairs rooms and busy family spaces.

LVT is a harder surface, although the overall sound will also depend on the construction of the floor beneath it.

Durability

A good quality carpet can perform very well when matched to the right room.

LVT is often chosen for areas with heavier foot traffic because it is hard wearing and easy to maintain.

The important part is choosing the right specification rather than simply choosing the toughest looking product.

Pets

For homes with pets, LVT is easy to wipe clean and does not trap hair.

Carpet can still work well where warmth and comfort matter, particularly if you choose a practical colour and texture.

Bedrooms

Carpet remains the strongest choice where comfort, warmth and quietness are priorities.

LVT can work in a bedroom too, particularly where you want a cleaner contemporary look, but it is not automatically the better option.

Living rooms

Both work well. Choose carpet if you want softness, warmth and sound reduction.

Choose LVT if you prefer a firmer, easy clean surface or want a wood or stone look.

Hallways

Hallways usually see more foot traffic and dirt than bedrooms or lounges.

LVT can be easy to maintain here, although a suitable contract or heavy domestic carpet can also perform very well.

Preparation

LVT usually needs a flatter and more carefully prepared subfloor than carpet. That preparation is important because imperfections underneath can affect the finished appearance.

Carpet is often more forgiving, although the existing floor still needs to be suitable before installation.

Installation

Carpet and LVT are installed very differently.

Carpet usually involves gripper, underlay where required, stretching and trimming. LVT may require smoothing compounds, adhesive and more detailed floor preparation.

This is one reason comparing the price of the flooring alone can be misleading.

Cost

Carpet is often the lower cost route, particularly for bedrooms, stairs and larger areas.

LVT can cost more because the product and preparation requirements are different.

The best comparison is the finished installed price rather than the price of the flooring alone.

Which should I choose?

Choose carpet if softness, warmth and sound reduction matter most.

Choose LVT if easy cleaning, durability and a wood or stone look matter more.
